Saw one of these today. Two tone paint looks good even on modern vehicles. I’m not sure why it’s not more common.

it drives cost way up. you’re not only adding an extra color in the paint process, you need people to (correctly) apply the masks before the second color. On a high-margin vehicle like an F-150 King Ranch it can be justified, but for a mainstream car not enough people will pay extra for it.

Agreed, just because it makes Patrick George cry .

There are some exceptions, but it does look tacky as hell on a LOT of cars.

I bet you think this looks good too:

yes, because it does

I can get behind this. One of my favorites was actually a Camry from the early-mid 90's. I know, bad Hooker. But really, it was snazzy.

Something like this? Doesn’t look bad at all and is much classier than solid beige.

i’m not 100% sure, but at least with the Subaru it looks like the second color is done with different plastic cladding.

..... I hate it.... Gumpert Apollos only looked good in solid colors. Some old cars are ok, but even a 2cv loOKs bad to me with it.....

I never liked the Outback Sport or Crosstrek. I don’t like any Outbacktified cars but 2-tone paint job on this generation of Outback Sport looks particularly bad. Thankfully when my wife decided she wanted an Impreza hatchback, I didn’t need to convince her to go that way over the Crosstrek. She was like, “what’s that extra plastic crap stuck on the Crosstrek supposed to do besides make it ugly?”

I love two tone. You can still get it on some cars.
But, it can look kind of awkward on new cars.

I couldn’t agree more.

Counterpoint. And yes, this was a factory paint option.

That thing that started life as an S-class could have looked good. Different colors. And more importantly, change the location of the separation line. The line should follow natural body lines, not just some arbitrary swoops. The body kit isn’t helping things either.

I’d love to see paint jobs like these on trucks again

This is my favorite: Brodgar Brown with a Pale Brodgar contrast hood/roof.
Some other good examples:

Those Subarus look like they were in an accident and then had panels replaced with random mismatched ones from a junk yard.
Two can can look fantastic but the cookies need to work together and the separation line needs to follow natural body lines, the fewer turns the better.

The late 90s ES did it even better. It even had a very subtle black/grey two tone. Also dem wheels.

For most older subies yes. But not the one pictured

Holy cow i saw the same two tone subaru today. Except the main color was gold

I love the ES from a similar time as well! I don’t love the car itself but they nailed the details. The wheels are amazing.

I don’t know about the gold, but this blue and silver was a limited option. I saw one today like the one pictured, but it had vehicles parked all around it so I couldn’t get a good pic.

What if I told you two-tone was still a thing?
A lot of the expensive cars do it with carbon fibre. But if this look is popular it could trickle down well enough. The i8 is another car that uses the effect extensively

I’m actually not a fan of the two tone on these cars. I think it’s because the thickness and how far it goes up the car is so inconsistent, and it doesn’t line up from panel to panel (front bumper to front fender for example). The second generation Outback on the other hand did it well.

Mt wife has a 2008 Outback with the two tone brown paint.......
Jesus, it’s seriuosly ugly.
